Nathan is a USPTA Elite Certified tennis pro who has built a 16-year career with titles ranging from Staff Pro to Director. He currently resides as the Head of the High-Performance Academy at the prestigious Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

As an instructor, he has been a standout in the industry with his strong knowledge of establishing fundamentals and implementing modern techniques at various play levels. 

He excels at working with teams to optimize peak performance through motivation and understanding of the mental game. He has coached several teams to National Championships and continues to coach numerous juniors to play Division 1 tennis.

Nathan’s tennis career started as a junior in Virginia. He was ranked top 5 in the Mid-Atlantic and top 100 nationally throughout his junior career. Despite a devastating arm injury and several surgeries leading him to play with his non-dominant arm, Nathan went on to play at the collegiate level where he was named All-ODAC at Virginia Wesleyan College. He later walked onto Division 1 James Madison University.

Cummings holds certification by the USPTA and the USPTR and has taught, coached, or trained sectional, national, and world-ranked players. Included in that group of players are Tzipi Obziler, the 1995 #1 ranked women’s player, #15 regionally-ranked Miguel Rosa, the 1995 CAA Men’s Player of the Year, and former ITA East Regional champion and four-time CAA Player of the Year Nataly Cahana.

Cummings is responsible for bringing the United States Tennis Association Area Training Center to Old Dominion and has served as the tournament director for the USTA Women’s $10,000 Satellite Event in Norfolk. As a result of these successful tennis activities and Cummings hard work, Old Dominion received the 1993 Virginia Tennis Association Organization of the Year award.

As a player, Cummings is part of a rich and decorated history. At Old Dominion, he captured a doubles title in the Sun Belt Conference and a Virginia State singles title. He was a member of the 1985-86 Monarch team that set a school record for the most wins with a 20-3 mark.

Sergey Avdeyev is currently a coach at Old Dominion as men’s tennis assistant coach. Before that, he was at Oklahoma, where he served as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2015-16 season. 

The Sooners went 20-11 in 2015-16 but ended the season with a spectacular run to the NCAA Championship match. OU recorded upsets over No. 3 UCLA, No. 6 Wake Forest and No. 7 Georgia en route to the title match, before falling to top-seeded Virginia.

At Oklahoma, Avdeyev coached numerous nationally-ranked players and guided several Sooners at the Fall ITA Indoor National Championships and other individual fall tournaments. A 2009 graduate of Oklahoma, Avdeyev was a top 50 player for the Sooners in both singles and doubles. He played in the No. 1 singles slot for OU and served as team captain during his senior year in 2008-09.

Following his collegiate career, Avdeyev also competed on the professional circuit for two years. A native of Kazakhstan, Avdeyev was ranked in the top 10 in his country and was also a member of Kazakhstan’s junior Davis Cup team. On the ATP, Avdeyev recorded several victories over top 200 world-ranked players.

Yana completed her second season at Old Dominion in 2019-20 and has compiled an impressive 30-7 dual match record over the past two spring seasons. In her first season at ODU in 2018-19, Sokolenko helped the program to its highest-ever ranking of No. 19 in the ITA National Rankings, while earning the program’s very first at large bid to the NCAA tournament.

In 2019-20, the team finished with a No. 24 national rankings. Yulia Starodubtseva and Alesya Yakubovich ended the year as the No. 7 ranked doubles tandem in the country, the highest doubles ranking in program history.

Before her coaching career, she played tennis at VCU from 1999-2002. She was instrumental in the Rams advancing to the 2012 NCAA Quarterfinals. While in Richmond, she was an All-American Scholar-Athlete (2000) and Dean’s List recipient (1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003). Sokolenko received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science (3.7 GPA) in December of 2001 and then earned her Masters of Arts degree in Economics (3.9 GPA) in May of 2005.

On a professional level, Sokolenko was ranked as high as No. 529 in the world (WTA Tour). In 1996-97, she was a member of the Belarus National Fed Team. Sokolenko also spent a year managing her own small tennis academy, Team GP, in Marbella, Spain.
